About REX 2019
Welcome to REX!
Qualified story-telling and artistry are characteristics of REX Animation Film Festival, now back for the 5th year in a row. The festival provides a unique opportunity to experience what is going on in the world of European animation, right here in Stockholm!
Whether you’re looking for documentary or experimental animation, REX Animation Film Festival offers an opportunity to enjoy animation as art. One ambition of REX is to shrink the gap between the gallery space and the movie theatre – between moving image in art and in film, and we’re hoping the festival will serve as a place to meet for artists and audiences from both of these worlds.
The short films in the programme are organised in thematic blocks and represent a wide spectrum of voices from all over Europe, demonstrating that animated film is truly a medium of our time. Themes for this year’s short film for adults are Dependencies, Sensibilities, Memories, Realities, and Families. Thursday is Halloween Night, with a block of spooky shorts so good it’s scary. Stop motion is celebrated with its own block this year. Saturday and Sunday we have daytime screenings and workshops for children: Check out REX for Kids!
On Saturday we screen two contemporary features covering the production of two documentaries of the last century, Land Without Bread (1933) and Un Homme Est Mort (1950), depicting social injustice aiming to bring about political change. In the animated features, the original films are re-placed in a contemporary context and through animation, given a second life.
Talks with invited directors, workshops and our Student Award provide additional perspectives and fun – also for the general public.
Main venue is Zita Fokets Bio, second by Bio Capitol. Additional activities will take place at Lava Kulturhuset Stadsteatern and at schools and colleges around Stockholm.
Come join the fun!
The festival is arranged by
