REX Festival Program 2025

Join the Fun at the 11th REX Animation Festival in Stockholm!

The 11th edition of REX Animation Festival this year takes place from the 17th of November until the 22nd of November. The main program will be hosted at Zita Folkets Bio, with Kids Screenings held at Skärisbiografen.

The festival opens with our dedicated Industry Day with a focus on Stop-Motion Animation.

The day begins with Work in Progress Presentations featuring leading Swedish animators, including: Niki Lindroth von Bahr, Anna Mantzaris, and Mikaela Box. Then we continue Panel Discussion addressing the theme: The Next Step for Swedish Stop Motion.

In the afternoon, we host two dedicated Masterclasses: one led by Carolina Sandvik and the second by internet sensation Alexander Unger (Guldies). The evening concludes with a curated selection of Swedish Stop Motion Short Films, followed by a Q&A session with the featured directors.

During this week, animation enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to watch more than 100 short animated films, one feature film, and attend many presentations, masterclasses, and Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. The program consists of both competitive and non-competitive selections curated by REX, as well as several special guest programs.

Competitive Programs
The competitive section includes:

The International Competition presents a spectrum of three distinct programs carefully curated by REX Animation Festival: Elsewhere and Here, The Shape We Take, and Beneath and Above the Waters.

The Nordic Competition offers a program of the most recent and best animated short films produced in the Nordic region (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden).

The Swedish Student Competition is a vital program that offers a glimpse into the future of animation in Sweden.

The EUNIC Selection is a unique program, created in collaboration with the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), where we select one film from each of our nine supporting countries this year: France, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Ukraine, and Wallonia-Brussels.

Non-Competitive and Special Programs
As for the non-competitive screenings curated by REX, we are proud to present two distinct and defining programs that have become an annual tradition at the REX Animation Festival: REXperimental and Animated Music Videos.

Our guest screenings include:

The WTF-OFF program, curated by Sebastien Sperer and Gala Frecon, is a selection of animated short films that defy convention.

The Palestine Animated program is a powerful and essential collection that offers a crucial window into Palestinian lives, memory, and resilience through the vibrant medium of animation. As part of this program, we will screen the feature film “The Tower.” This award-winning, beautifully animated film tells the story of Wardi, an eleven-year-old Palestinian girl growing up in a Lebanese refugee camp.

Kids Program
This year, the Kids Program will focus on Ukraine. We will screen a program of animated shorts for children made by Ukrainian filmmakers before, during, and after the war. This program will be divided into two different sections suitable for the age groups of +2 and +7.
