Nudging the ground!

Anibar Animation Festival

There is not a single style, story line or structure that defines the struggles of these characters. Struggle and suffering is what connects them. War, patriarchy and mental health are at the basis of these stories. It seems like this triangle is what also connects the struggles of the artists themselves. They too have gone through this post war progressive transformation of the society.

Trying to set up an animation industry in a country with no animation tradition is as hard as it gets. Such is the case of Kosovo, the youngest country in Europe. This fine selection of films represents some of the animated films produced from 2019 till 2022. These animators have been contributing to the creation of some of the most acclaimed films in Kosovar animation history. With their work they might have created a ripple effect. Which seems like one that will nudge the grounds.

Downtime

By: Yuvia Maini

Sweden

03:27

“Downtime” (Lågtid) is a work dedicated to the low points of time. The short film examines the space between existences in the visual artist Ellisif Hals dry-needle printed world. What happens when life gets flooded with low tide? What happens between the layers of work in off-season? What are we doing with our downtime?

The audiovisual work was born from an interdisciplinary collaboration between the visual artist Ellisif Hals, the animator Yuvia Maini and the composer Cassius Lambert. In the short film, they freely explore the subconscious landscapes of Hals’s artworks. Together, they discuss what happens when the highpoint of life takes a break and creates landscapes that make us return to the inflation of meaninglessness. The work is supported by Swedish Arts Grant Committee.

I wanted to show these ideas using a mix of 2D and stop motion animation, combining the hand drawn with real materials.
