Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles
By Salvador Simó, Spain (2018), 88 min, Spanish with English subtitles
Paris, 1930. Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel are already the main figures of the Surrealist movement. Unexpectedly, Buñuel is left moneyless after the scandal surrounding his film The Golden Age. His next project, a documentary about one of the poorest Spanish regions, Las Hurdes, seems unmanageable. His good friend, sculptor Ramón Acín, buys a lottery ticket. Incredibly, luck is on their side. This is the story of the making of Land Without Bread (1933).
Scenes from the, at times, disturbing film are shown in this animated feature. A lot has been said about Buñuel’s methods in this filmmaking process. Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles portrays an era and depicts the practices of the time.
